Remembering Sports Radio

(September 12, 1975-March 29, 1981)

There were two seperate incarnations of The Sports Team at WOND-AM in Pleasantville, Radio 1400.

First, in the mid-to-late 1960s, Tom Williams joined Tom Lamaine on All-American WOND to provide play-by-play of high school football and basketball. Williams had started doing halftime and postgame reports during basketball broadcasts by Ralph Glenn and Gene Packard on WOND in 1963-64. He also was the night-time "DJ" on WOND, creating the "Teenage All-Americans".

In addition to Lamaine and Williams, the other personalities on WOND during that period included Joel Carson, Jay Connell, Mike Elliot, Jeff Green, Harry Hoffman, Red Karr, Pinky Kravitz, Jack Lawyer, Walt Murphy, Bob Purfield, Skip Rafferty, Bruce Roberts, Jessica Savitch, Bob Weems and Don Williams. In addition to their work on the radio, that group played over 60 benefit basketball games during a four-year stretch that raised more than $15,000.00.
