starts with a blizzard of basketball! There were 14 games scheduled over the four-day President's Weekend but the very first day was wiped out by snow. With full cooperation from the coaches and athletic directors involved, we actually managed to play 14 games in the three remaining days, though they were not all the original matchups. The 1996 Shootout was the first regular season showcase of girls basketball in New Jersey and it brought great teams from four states together, giving fans a chance to see them all in the same location - Egg Harbor Township High School. Notre Dame took on two National powers - Christ the King and Cardinal O'Hara - during the weekend. Area fans got their first look at future WNBA player Kristen "Ace" Clement of O'Hara, New York's Christ the King and some of the Garden State's best. Read on for game summaries. All teams listed are from New Jersey except where indicated. Saturday, February 17, 1996 11:00 Middle Township 57, Holy Spirit 37 Lauren Wall had 18 points for the Panthers. Melissa Dunne scored 11 for Spirit. 1:00 Washington Township 47, Hammonton 41 Tracy Ojeniyi had 11 points for the Minutemaids. Amanda Haines had 12 for Hammonton. 3:00 Delran 69, Ocean City 65 Kim Brown finished with 23 points and five assists while Michele Pilenza scored 22 points for Delran (13-5), which had to hold off a furious rally by the Raiders (10-11). Grace Ferguson scored 13 for Ocean City and Margaret Carey had eight assists. 5:00 Cardinal O'Hara PA 75, Notre Dame 31 Kristen "Ace" Clement had 28 points and five assists for O'Hara (22-1). Monica Staniec scored 11the Irish (18-2). 7:00 St. Mary's MD 55, Egg Harbor Township 50 Tara Foran had 30 points and seven rebounds for Harry Dobson's team, which lifted its record to 20-0. Karen Shutz had 16 points and six assists for EHT. Amy Mason added nine points, two rebounds and two assists for the Eagles. 9:00 Gloucester Catholic 50, Mainland 29 Michelle Riley had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Rams. Kristy LeNoir had nine points and seven boards for the Mustangs, who suffered their first defeat after 20 straight wins. Sunday, February 18, 1996 1:00 Woodrow Wilson 62, Vineland 53 Nailah Wallace had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Wilson (18-2). Allison Baruffi scored 20 and made five steals for the Clan (13-6). 3:00 Haddonfield 55, Holy Spirit 39 Brie Cokos had 17 points and nine rebounds for Haddonfield (17-2). Beth Hartman scored 11 points for Spirit (13-8). 5:00 Archbishop Carroll PA 84, St. Mary's MD 64 Lizz Greene had 19 points and 15 rebounds for Carroll (17-6). Tiffany Schummer had 20 points and 11 rebounds for St. Mary's (20-1). 7:00 Christ the King NY 57, Egg Harbor Township 31 EHT led, 14-12, after one quarter but the Royals outscored the Eagles, 11-0, in the second period and took over from there. Jamie Buttner had 12 for CTK. Patty Russo and Ann Slusarski each had seven for EHT. Amy Mason added six points on a pair of three-pointers. It was after this game that Joe Fussner became the "King of Pancakes". Monday, February 19, 1996 1:00 Bishop Eustace Prep 57, Middle Township 47 Kelly Hamilton had 19 points, 14 rebounds and four steals for Eustace. Kate Jackson scored 18 for Middle. 3:00 Christ the King NY 65, Notre Dame 54 Kristeena Alexander had 21 points for Christ the King. Jen Hutchinson kept Notre Dame close with 33 points, including six of 11 from three-point distance. 5:00 Ocean City 58, Sterling 57 Katie Gibson scored at the buzzer to provide the Raiders (11-12) with the upset win. Jen Henshaw paced Ocean City with 18 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Durkin had 22 points and 12 boards for Sterling (18-3). 7:00 West Milford 61, Mainland 54 Leisha Space scored 20 points for West Milford (19-2) with Wendy Kane getting 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kristy LeNoir had 21 points and nine boards for the Mustangs (20-2).
