Former Ocean City High School athlete Margaret Carey is back in the South Jersey area.
Carey was hired recently by Joe Fussner as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Richard Stockton
College. She will join former Pleasantville star Faye Gerald and former St. Joseph coach Ed Kirkwood on
Fussner’s staff.
Carey had three successful years at OCHS, playing both basketball and tennis. She led the basketball
team in scoring as a junior and scored 541 points at Ocean City. She transferred to Penncrest (PA) High
School for her senior year, where she averaged 12.5 points, six assists and four steals. At Mount St.
Mary’s, Carey walked on and earned a scholarship.
In one college game against Quinnipiac, she scored 23 points, including six straight free throws in the final
79 seconds. At The Mount, she hit five three-pointers in one game and only missed one free throw during
her entire sophomore season.
Four other OCHS graduates are playing prominent roles for teams in the top 20.
Senior Abbey Woolley has 11 goals and eight assists for the No. 5 ranked North Carolina field hockey
team. The Tar Heels are 12-4.
Sophomore Cory Picketts has scored five goals, three of them game-winners, for Princeton (12-2), which is
ranked No. 7 in NCAA field hockey.
Sophomore Jenee Doto has five goals and five assists, including two goals in a recent win over Miami, for
No. 10 Ohio State (11-4).
And freshman Chad Severs scored the only goal in the second overtime last week to give No. 17 Penn
State (8-3-1) a 1-0 win over Michigan State. It was his second game-winning overtime goal of the season.
Severs has four goals and five assists.
There are three former Raiders putting up numbers at Rowan. Scott Lipford has caught 32 passes for 604
yards and eight touchdowns for the Profs. Kevin Sinclair has 18 carries for 74 yards. And Steffon Davis has
an interception.
Another former Raider, Josh Baker, has made 23 tackles in seven games for The College of New Jersey.
Greg LeFever was named Conference Defensive Player of the Week at East Carolina. He is second on the
team in tackles and leads the team in tackles for losses.
Earlier this year, an Ocean City moment occurred at Western Maryland. WMU defeated Franklin &
Marshall, 1-0, in soccer when sophomore Christine Mayne assisted on the only goal to freshman Kristen
Goodreau. Both are former Raiders. Mayne, incidentally, who also played basketball and lacrosse at
OCHS, spent part of her summer as queen of Ocean City’s Baby Parade.
Pat Lynch, now an assistant wrestling coach at Absegami, will be inducted into the South Jersey
Wrestling Hall of Fame on Nov. 3. He was 133-4 in his four years at OCHS, including a state record 103
pins. He once won 99 straight matches. Lynch was 80-19 in college and became an All-American. For
ticket information phone 856-662-2455.
Jay Toscano gained 172 yards and scored a touchdown in four games at Gettysburg but suffered a
concussion that is keeping him out of action.
Whitey Haak, who played for OCHS back in the days when the high school gym was considered
adequate, was named New Jersey’s Golf Coach of the Year by the National Federation Coaches
Association. Haak, who coaches both golf and boys basketball at Mainland, will receive his award on
March 17 in Edison. He will also compete for the Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
Austin Martin has gained 271 yards in 57 carries and scored four touchdowns for Widener. Another former
Raider, Kevin McCann, is the backup quarterback at Widener behind record-setting passer Mike Warker
from Oakcrest.
We’ll have more about former Raiders later.
