OCHS Teams of the Century

Chad Severs Raider Boys Soccer Player of the Century!

The first 20 years of boys soccer at Ocean City High School has been something special. The Raiders won more than 70 percent of their games and finished the 20th century with three state championships in the last six years.

Normally, it might be difficult to pick the outstanding player from such an obviously talented group. And there were a number of players that might have been the OCHS Player of the Century.

If not for Chad Severs.

Severs was a three-time South Jersey scoring champion, two-time South Jersey Player of the Year and the second highest career scorer in New Jersey history. He has clearly earned the title of Raider Player of the Century.

Joining Severs on the all-century team are a pair of talented forwards – Brendan Gallagher, who held the school scoring records that Severs broke, and Brian Geary, an All-South Jersey selection.

Leading the midfielders is Pete Lambert, who joins Severs as a two-time all-state selection. Also at midfielder are Bill Grace from the early 1980s, Don DellaPorta and Chip Mower from the late 80s and Marc Domsic from the late 90s.

The defense is led by Jamie Lehman, a two-time all-conference choice in the late 1980s, and Mike Cellini, an all-state pick in the mid 90s. The defense is rounded out by Bill Bailey, who only played one year (the school’s first) but made such an impression that the top defender award was later named for him; All-South Jersey selection Dave Tormey; and two-time all-conference pick Mike McAlarnen.

The goalkeeper is two-time all-conference pick Bob McAllister from the late 80s. McAllister is the only OCHS athlete to play in two state all star games – in his case, soccer and basketball.

Every OCHS boys soccer coach has had success but the edge as Coach of the Century goes to Mike Pellegrino. In four years, he has more post-season victories than other coaches with more years at the helm, along with two state titles and three appearances in the South Jersey final. Pellegrino joins Mike Naples (3), Trish LeFever (3) and Dixie Howell (2) as the only OCHS coaches with two or more state championships.

Picking the best team of the century is just as difficult as choosing the all stars. But the nod goes to the 1999 team, which won a share of the state championship with a 20-4-1 record. And most of the players on that team returned the following year to win another state title.
