OCHS Teams of the 90's

Joi Johnson top Raider girls basketball player of the 90s!

Ocean City High School had seven winning seasons in the 10 girls basketball seasons that ended during the 1990s. And the school had its share of talented players.

The best of the bunch was Joi Johnson, whose 22.8 points per game in 1992-93 was the most during the decade, the second highest average in school history and the most since the 26.6 averaged by Lisa Foglio 14 years earlier. Johnson also led the Raiders to their only championship of the 90s, a division title in her junior year, and was in the lineup for four of the eight tournament games that Ocean City won in the 90s. She also led her team in scoring three straight years.

Two other members of our all-decade team also led their team in scoring three straight years, though not all were in the 90s. Margaret Rowell, who joins Johnson at forward, led her team three straight years but the first two were in the late 80s. In Rowell’s senior year (1989-90) she guided OC into the South Jersey final for the only time in the 90s.

The third straight year for center Jessica Brookes came during the just-ended 1999-2000 season, which actually counts in the next decade.

Johnson, Rowell and Brookes are the three 1,000-point career scorers on this team (though only Johnson actually scored 1,000 during the 90s) and the guards on our all-decade team will help them get the ball. Tricia Hopson is the point guard and would accumulate assist after assist with this inside lineup. And Yulvonka Legette brings quickness and defensive pressure to the team.

Chris Lentz, who coached the Raiders all throughout the 1990s, would also have some talent on the bench. Forwards Mikenzie Custer and Serena Dice could rebound and score inside. Center Shelly Meister could rebound and defend effectively. Margaret Carey, who played three years but left before her senior year when her family moved away, was a quick point guard. And Chris Carcara could fire from the perimeter.
