Scott Lipford top Raider boys track athlete of the 90s!

There were ups and downs during the 1990s for the Ocean City High School boys track team
The Raiders had six winning seasons and four losing seasons, while winning six Cape May County titles
and finishing second in a state Group 3 meet - the best performance in school history.
Seven of the 15 school records that existed in 2000 were set during the decade of the 90s and two others
were tied. The only guy to set three of those marks, Scott Lipford, was the school's Boys Track Athlete of
the 1990s.
Lipford holds school records for the 800 meters (1:54.74) and the 400 hurdles (54.27). He also joined Ben
Marple, Vic Rolls and Walt Buganski to set the school record for the 4x400 meter relay. He is the only
athlete to currently hold three marks (counting the relay, though Buganski and Leon Brown both hold two.
"Scott could probably have done a lot more for us," said Wayne Colman, who coached the Raiders
throughout the decade. "He was so versatile and so talented he probably could have added points for us in
the jumps and sprints. But he was best in the 800 and the 400 hurdles, so we let him concentrate on
those events along with the 400 and the relay."
Other school record-holders on our all-decade team include Kevin Sinclair, who tied the school mark (10.6)
in the 100 meters; Buganski (49.7) in the 400; Don Gartland, who tied the mark of 14.6 in the 110 hurdles;
Sean McDole (174-0) in the discus; Pat Peterson (6-6.5) in the high jump; and Jon Howell (13-7) in the
pole vault.
Colman and assistant coach Bill Moreland were given the chance to pick a "dream" relay team of 1990s
runners who were not necessarily ever teammates. But both coaches felt they couldn't improve on the
team of Marple, Lipford, Rolls and Buganski.
The 90s were filled with strong performances on the Ocean City High School boys track team, including
many of the greatest accomplishments in school history.
